Should You Risk DNA Testing During Pregnancy?

DNA testing during pregnancy can determine the identity of a father before a child is even born. This can be important for several reasons. If there is more than one man claiming to be the father, for instance, the matter is best cleared up as quickly as possible. There may even be an issue as to where the child will live once it is born. In a case where a suspected father is trying to avoid their responsibility, it can be equally important to demonstrate that that person is the blood father and that the law insists the child must be cared for.

It is important to realize, however, that there is always a degree of risk attached to prenatal DNA testing. The fetus is at its most delicate during the early weeks when it is developing, and the tests which can determine the identity of the father can be problematic. It is better to have these tests carried out in the early weeks to minimize the risk. There is a DNA testing procedure called Chorionic villus sampling, which is only possible during a very short window of time, from week 10 to week 13 of the pregnancy.

This form of testing involves a reduced degree of risk, even though it is very early in the life of the fetus, because it takes tissue from the uterine wall. The tissue is from the same source as the egg which evolves into the fetus, and can therefore yield the genetic information which is needed. Should this window of opportunity be missed, there is no alternative but to use the alternative Amniocentesis procedure which involves considerably greater risk.

This form of prenatal DNA testing can be practiced right up to week 24 of a pregnancy, but at any stage it involves severe risk, including miscarriage. Think very carefully before you choose to have this procedure carried out, because the risk is there of something permanent and irreversible happening. Remember, the possibility always exists of carrying out paternity tests after the child has been safely born. Don't be tempted to take unnecessary risks just because of your own immature impatience.

The risks involved in DNA testing during pregnancy get higher as time passes, and after week 24 there are very few physicians who will be prepared to carry out such tests. Whatever the circumstances of any potential dispute which may be resolved by finding out the true parentage of a child, the primary consideration must be the welfare of the unborn baby. In the end, you have to make your own choice, but please do so in full knowledge of the facts, and of the potential implications of your actions. As a general rule, the longer you leave it, the more risky becomes DNA testing during pregnancy.
