How DNA Test Results Improves Crime Rates

In cases where it is imperative that the identity of the perpetrator of a crime is established DNA test results can easily be used. Establishing identity can be used for simple matters such as paternity, or in serious crimes such as murder or rape. DNA can be used to exonerate innocent individuals as well as build solid cases against guilty persons. People committing a crime leave DNA behind in some degree that can then be collected and processed. The samples of DNA that are obtained must be of good quality to lend facts to the case.

In the 1980s DNA testing was discovered and developed in England. Before long the world quickly realized the implications of perfecting DNA test results. Once DNA testing was perfected to a minimal error it was provided commercially and rapidly incorporated into both civil and criminal cases. DNA samples from living relatives has been used to give new life to cold cases nearly a century old.

DNA profiling is possible because the DNA of each individual is unique. The DNA of both parents is combined and transferred to their child creating a specific code for that child alone. Because of this natural occurrence, DNA is very appropriate in cases of paternity and offered by many private services. In cases of criminal activity it is imperative to obtain as pure a sample of DNA as possible to prevent any error and give solid undeniable proof.

Samples that have been contaminated or have degraded over time pose problems when attempting to establish a DNA profile. Contamination is possible at any time when dealing with the samples. Situations have been established in which the collection swab used for DNA extraction had already had DNA present on it, leading to a guaranteed incorrect result. The elapse of time has lead to the deterioration of samples and cast doubt upon the DNA testing results.

Achieving uncompromised samples and procedural certainty are essential to the use of DNA test results in the result of cases. If juries are provided the slightest doubt about the samples either in collection or storage, they have immediate cause to disregard the results of the DNA testing. It is essential that law enforcement masters the collection, storage and testing of DNA samples to achieve the highest detection rates possible from DNA testing results.
